We were very excited to receive an extra special delivery this week – the Norfolk Cook Book! Hot off the presses, this is a brand new book dedicated to the wonderful food of our region. And my one piece of advice in this blog entry is – do not read this book if you are hungry! Only a few pages in and my mouth was watering and I was poring over the glorious photos of absolute beautiful, delicious food. The Norfolk Cook Book is part of the ‘Get Stuck In’ series of regional cook books. However, it quickly becomes clear that this isn’t simply a gimmick or a template, the Norfolk flavour of this book stands out a mile and everything within is rooted in our amazing county.
The premise is simple, 50 of Norfolk’s finest restaurants and food producers have selected at least one of their signature dishes with a distinct Norfolk flavour and provided the recipe so that you can reproduce these delicious meals at home. Alongside this, the book provides a wealth of detail about the people who have designed and produced these dishes and some history behind the eateries that serve them.
It really is a fantastic introduction to the diverse culinary landscape of Norfolk, from wonderful seafood dishes such as Fresh Cromer Lobster with Garlic and Chilli Sauce & Cromer Crab Risotto from The Grove at Cromer; mouth-watering desserts such as Brioche Pudding from The Garden Pantry in Spooner Row and Rack of Toft Monks Lamb from The Swan in Loddon; to delicious vegetarian options such as the Moorish Tagine with Butternut Squash and Onion Garnish from the Moorish Falafel Bar in Norwich.
Green Pastures was honoured to be asked to provide a recipe from our own Gardeners Kitchen restaurant and you will find our ‘Binham Blue and Tomato Quiche with Charred Asparagus and Golden Beetroot’ recipe on page 133. We chose this recipe as it celebrates our home-grown produce including our asparagus, delicious golden beetroot and famous Green Pastures garden fresh salads, all grown right here in Bergh Apton.
If the book was just an introduction to Norfolk food, that would be fantastic in itself. But, of course, the addition of the recipes means that you will return to this book again and again when you are looking to produce a truly memorable and special meal. The recipes are clearly written and presented in a way that encourages you to ‘have a go’ and, while they are certainly special, they do not come across as too difficult or complicated for the average home cook.
It was an absolute pleasure to look through this book, it makes a fantastic and unique gift, either for someone who loves cooking or Norfolk, or both! It is available to buy from Green Pastures for just £14.95. If you cannot make it into the Garden Centre, don’t worry as we can send copies direct from our Post Office (an additional postage & packing charge of £3.50 will apply).
